Director Statement

I am a first-generation American of Cuban and British descent who strives to create work that takes a hard look at the darkest parts of ourselves and our society, while still cultivating light, laughter, and heart. I believe that comedy is one of the best ways to break down cultural barriers and create empathy. LEGIT MARRIED is a love letter to NYC and all of the possibilities it holds for immigrants, small town dreamers, and misfits looking for a place to call home. At a time of great racial divide in the U.S., I believe that stories that center the immigrant experience will encourage people to recognize the struggles of others, contemplate their own privilege, and in turn relate to each other in a more generous way regardless of cultural background, immigration status, religion, or race. This is why I can’t think of a better time to share a story that celebrates a coming together of two people from different backgrounds who - flawed as they may be - are doing their best to support and understand each other in this crazy, broken, yet somehow beautiful world.
