Legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers
What is the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers? What did they leave behind that inspires us and causes us to honor their memory? In a word it is Service-the willingness to literally lay down their lives for others. By doing this in the face of hardship, danger and even the hatred of their countrymen, with little reward, they became more than simple Soldiers.
They often faced blame, punishment, and discrimination. Even when investigated, dishonorably discharged, challenged by racial and gender norms, these soldiers fought with valor. These men and women were decorated generals, celebrated artists, trail blazers, beloved fathers, medal of honor recipients and soldiers.
In this short we are honoring Anna Russell Jones and Isaiah Mays, as stories of the Army's first black regulars. Stories built on the legacy of the buffalo soldiers.
