Samuel Fortunato is a director with a special interest in documentaries. He directed the short film "Um Certo Maralonso" (2019), screened and awarded at Brazilian festivals, as well as "Fossa" (2016). His most recent work, “Corpo que fala” (2022), co-directed with Bruno Rubim, was screened at festivals such as the 33rd São Paulo International Short Film Festival and 15th "Visões Periféricas", in addition to the SescTV acquisition award at Cine Favela LGBTQIA+ (Brazil ,RJ). As a camera assistant, he worked on feature films by Ruy Guerra, Djin Sganzerla, among others.
"Leda" has been in the making for 7 years and it means a lot not only on a personal level. Brazil went through dark moments of attack of our culture and demobilization of national cinema by previous governments and could only be completed with a small but sufficient state funding. This film represents the possibility for ladies like Leda to be the protagonists of a film and show the world a little of her life. It's a film of the struggle that millions of Brazilian favela residents have to face daily to have their rights as respected citizens. It represents for me, the chance to tell about my country richness and the powerful aspects our people have.
