Lea's DIY

Lea’s DIY is a short digital series that combines a story about creative approaches to survival in America with a tutorial about hands-on home creation. Lea’s creative use of repurposed materials reveals the dynamic process of personal renewal gained through imaginative work.
Every episode involves Lea’s efforts at DIY interior design and furniture creation in a variety of cities, beginning with New York. Our adventurous heroine recovers materials found in each city and has colorful encounters with neighbors and colleagues who ‘‘get it’’. Each episode reveals Lea’s immersion within a neighborhood and details her methods of creating living solutions within the means of each environment – and within her evolving financial capacities.

The backdrop of the series is Lea’s actual arrival in New York. The struggle to find an affordable apartment leads her to Harlem and a small, unfurnished room. Confronted with the spectacle of unusual New York neighbors, daily set backs, and mysteries to be solved, she travels throughout the city to unearth forgotten treasures. While tinkering, she must enroll in college, meet friends, and take on odd jobs to survive. She will very quickly cross paths with a mysterious young man who fascinates her. Throughout the episodes, Lea will convince herself that he is a serial killer and will start stalking him. Putting herself in danger, she will eventually corner this individual who will actually be much more charming than she had imagined.
