Learning Revolution

<Motives>

5 years ago, I promised to make a documentary about education because my 12 year experience in Korean schools made me realize that students are left behind in our education. Then, I started a student-centered education reform project named 'Project Self' and made various events, media, and communities. Five years of our project was a repetition of realizing I was wrong and seeking alternatives. Finally, I have a story I want to share. Through this documentary, I want to show that there's a different education closer than we have thought.

<Summary>

*This includes spoilers for the documentary.

Documentary starts with Project Self's'Mock CSAT(Korean College Entrance Examination)' event. It's an event of collegers retaking CSAT which have received nation-wide interest for two previous years only to me misunderstood as a political claim against CSAT. However, what we've intended was not about politics but our attitude towards learning. We decide to prepare for third Mock CSAT event in order to straighten things out.

The reason why I made Project Self is because I realized studying literature, ultimately learning, could be enjoyable as a middle schooler. However, studying done at school was far from such learning. I found the cause of this problem from Confucius' saying of 'studying for others'(studying for other's recognition) and thought the answer lies on'studying for self'(studying for self-fulfillment). This idea led to the foundation of Project Self.

We first hypothesized the reason why we'study for others' is because of social structure. However, after launching many conferences and meeting with people like the father of CSAT and HR department of a big company, we realize no one wants 'studying for others'.After more studying, I realize the key lies on differentiating schooling and education. Such differentiation leads us to ask, 'is there something we can change personally as a student?'.

We look for things students can do regardless of structure. We try to find various educational opportunities, change our attitude, make a curriculum, and make a community. Through such process, we find an inner self that seeks to improve through learning and teaching. We combine what we've done to make an ultimate solution and decide to use Mock CSAT's publicity to spread such solution.

However, although the third Mock CSAT event successfully sent an accurate message through the media, the public wasn't interested in inner change but more interested in structural change. Our ultimate solution also had cold reaction. Nevertheless, members of Project Self decide to live a life fulfilled with education.
