Leaf

The leading role Fang Shuyun, an overseas Chinese opera singer in the US, learned of the demolition and relocation of her family’s property in China and returned home to fight for her part of interests. When she returned to the hutong she left half her life, a battle to defend the property formally started between her and her elder sister, Fang Yingshu. Since their first meeting, the sisters, who originally took roots in the same family but now had get accustomed to very different living habits, started daily conflicts one after another. As Fang Yingshu and the neighborhood committee came to blows on the property demolition and relocation plan, Fang Shuyun had no choice but to sign the demolition agreement alone. However, when Fang Yingshu suddenly collapsed due to illness, Fang Shuyun finally came to learn the truth about Fang Yingshu’s unwillingness to leave. In the fight together against the disease, the two sisters also revealed each other’s secret that had been buried for half a lifetime - 50 years ago, behind the seemingly fierce “Uproot game” competition for the opportunity to go abroad is actually their thoughtful consideration for each other. A misunderstanding for a lifetime; one sister as leaf and another as the root; the theatrical tune of hutong forever echoes in the distance...

Director Statement

As a female director and scriptwriter, I intend to focus on the female gaze and the current situation of the elder Chinese women returning to their hometowns under pandemic. With an all-female cast of creators, I used the sisterhood relationship of Chinese elder women as a link, trying to interpret the balance between hometown love and the life reality of the old generation under the script of Peking Opera. “Uproot game” is a traditional children's game in Beijing of China, and a metaphor for sisterhood of the film. The symbolism of "root" represents hometown but the cruel truth is that, it is only when you let go of this attachment that you can actually start your own voyage away from family.
The film features retired acting Prof. Li Mingzhu of the Beijing Film Academy, with a cast of actors over 80 years old. In the film, the culture of Chinese opera is passed on in the pulse of human feelings, as is sung out loud in this film.
