Lazar

In the late 16th century, a self obsessed bard flees for his life from a posse of lawmen led by a self righteous Constable into Sherwood forest, only things are not quite as they seem when interrupted by… a wood nymph?

A story about challenging misconceptions, integrity and friendship, all wrapped up in a book you shouldn’t judge by its cover.

Director Biography - Rafe Bird, Michael Bird

We are a grass roots, independent, writer/director duo based in the Midlands. We have a penchant for ambitious, off beat stories with a drive for authenticity.

Comprised of Michael and Rafe Bird, we have over a decade of industry experience in various fields, including post production and acting.

During COVID-19 lockdowns, like oh so many, we picked up a camera and began learning the craft of directing, storytelling and filmmaking which culminated in our last project; Spooky Bastard.

Spooky Bastard played at BAFTA and BIFA qualifying festivals such as Aesthetica and Beeston Film Festival.

Director Statement

The film explores the power of stories, and the responsibility of those telling them, while reminding everyone of the age old adage - don't judge a book by its cover.

In the beginning the Bard character does not realise the weight of his words, or the real world effect of them. It is only by meeting the subject of his unsubstantiated song, that he begins to realise how truth and art have the power to shape the world.

In a post-truth world of misinformation and hatred, we believe that every song, story or film an artist creates has meaning and effect. We believe that even if the effect isn't immediate, and even if those around do not care or agree, as story tellers and film makers we need to create art and messages that align with our core values.

As storytellers, that is our responsibility.
