Sonja Strathearn is a visual artist who discovered her passion for filmmaking later in her career. She was born in the USA, raised in Australia from her childhood and returned to the USA with her husband and children to follow her husband's research career first in Texas, then Iowa.
As a mother, she told elaborate bedtime stories to her children for decades. As an artist she pursued her 'grand dreams' painting murals of tango dancers in landscapes on the walls of her house, making and teaching art, and writing a family history biography. Sonja took classes at Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa to learn more of media production and editing.
There was a time when I was obsessed with Argentine tango and I understand what draws people physically and emotionally to the dance. I'm also intrigued by people's back stories and their desires, the layers of one's past. 'Last Chance Tango' involved my local tango community in Eastern Iowa and my real tango teacher from Houston, Texas. Although this story was created from my imagination, it is true that all tango dancers have their own tango story, like a love story and usually not what they expect. This is also a realistic story of what it is like to be a beginner tango dancer in a small mid-west community. It's not 'Dancing with the Stars'. It is about connection. It is about failure but also hope.
