Director Statement

Together with the Burkinabe musician Mamadou Diabaté, we rethink the motives for sub-Saharan migration in form of an experimental music video, making them tangible for Western context.
Mamadou Diabaté's reflections and own experiences on migration motives, such as poverty and lack of education, are the main elements we process in the music video.
The title can be understood in two ways: On the one hand, the country of origin of returnees tells us what their life was like in Europe, so that what is told corresponds to the high expectations of the local population, but not to the actual truth. On the other hand, we learn how the constant struggle for survival in the country of destination affects the people concerned.
