Director Statement

In many ways, my journey with Landless began in my childhood, where I was immersed in a culture that shaped me as a young man. As an adult, I developed a better appreciation for my upbringing, but never felt like I found my "home."

What does "home" mean? Is it where you live, where you are from, or where you feel comfortable? Is it your culture or the beliefs you possess? Is it even a place?

Could it be a person?

Though Landless' very premise seems so far outside of my own experience, I prioritized grounding it with characters encountering these honest, emotional questions that have been posed in my own life.

Still requiring a ton of research, the writing process for Landless was a challenge in that I was extremely particular in telling the narrative of a man making a conscious choice to leave.

I hope your journey with this short film is as rewarding as it has been for me.

Thanks for watching,

Joshwa Walton, Writer/Director
