Heidi Scott is a writer, director, and teacher at the University of Maryland. Her filmmaking interests lie at the intersection of ecology, identity, and consumer culture. This is her first film.
I've been thinking about the premise of Landfill for years, as I've taught environmental literature and pondered the durability of our waste. Our consume-and-discard culture is more revealing of our values than any museum exhibit, and I wanted to explore what it will mean to future generations who must get by with less. I wrote a feature film script, which got some attention but no buyer, so I launched the short film production with profound help from my friends at WIFV-DC. I wrote, produced, and directed the film. My friends did everything else -- here's to collaboration.
