Director Statement

Lady in Red was conceptualized back in 2013, when I graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic School of Film & Media Studies (Singapore). I remembered struggling to discover my identity and purpose in life, which I explored with this short.

I encompassed many of my characteristics and principles into the characters. Leung is a representation of the mundane and aimless time I experienced while in the Army, having a desire to discover my direction in life. Yu was a representation of a childhood crush whom I never had the courage to pursue. Mr. Han represented a walking encyclopedia of my morals and principles, while Raj represented my candid manner at looking at issues in life and learning how to appreciate the little things; and the Lady in Red embodied the spiritual essence of the lady I met on my trip, who sparked emotions in me and made me understand and see love and desire with a new perspective.

I hope audiences will walk away with the understanding that sometimes who we desire may appear as someone we least expect, and may have been right in front of us all along if we can learn to focus on what’s important. As Bruce Lee once said: “Don’t think. Feel. It’s like a finger pointing at the moon. Do not concentrate on the finger, or you will miss all the heavenly glory.”
