When I first started doing research on Doris, AKA Lady D, I knew I needed to capture a performance, both acapella and with her band. I also knew the film needed a history lesson and she was the perfect candidate. I spent several incredible days following her around her world of Beckley, West Virginia. She took me to Charleston, WV, and we stood in the former black musical spaces bulldozed by highway expansion. We went to the holler in the country where she grew up. I'm so grateful for the time we spent together.
