Director Biography - Derek Kwan

Derek Kwan is a Chinese-Canadian Filmmaker and Actor based in Vancouver, BC. Naturally gravitating towards telling stories surrounding food and culture, Derek strives to bring narratives to screen through a lens that hasn’t been widely portrayed before. Derek’s career highlights include: [2022] Producer, MAUNDY (Narrative Short Film) - Telefilm Not Short on Talent, Cannes 2022. [2022] Netflix-BANFF Diversity of Voices selected participant. [2021] Reelworld E20 Program - named 1 of 20 emerging Canadian filmmakers for 2021. [2019] Producer, Idols Never Die (Narrative Short Film) - Telefilm Not Short on Talent, Cannes 2019. [2019] Director, Me (Documentary Short, Telus Storyhive) - WINNER: Grand Jury Best Short Documentary at SAAFF ‘19 and DisOrient ‘19, Notable Official Selections: Toronto Reel Asian ‘19, New York’s AAIFF ‘19). [2016] CBC Diverse Creators Workshop - 1 of 15 emerging Canadian filmmakers selected; To date, Derek has Directed and Produced various content pieces across CBC Arts, Comedy, Creator Network, Canada 150, Vancouver, and Recap. Lastly, Derek is currently in pre-production on a Canada Council for the Arts funded narrative short film ‘100 DAYS’, which he has Written and will Direct (Fall 2022). On screen, Derek can be seen on Season 2 of the Netflix comedy, ‘SPACE FORCE’ co-starring as “Chinese F. Tony”.

LONGAN is a meditative narrative-doc hybrid made in 48 hours for Vancouver's Run n Gun Fest. LONGAN was a Finalist and nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Editing.
