I wrote Lola as a woman that has also suffered from weight bias in the medical field. From being misdiagnosed to being subjected to various nonsensical pieces of advice from unknowing and uncaring practitioners. To inappropriate and unnecessary advice from well-meaning friends, to actually undergoing emergency surgery.
After my latest bout with pain that resulted in three months of immobility, I connected to many other women that had experienced the same uncaring medical professionals at best, painful surgery that could have been prevented, at worse.
I thought to myself that I needed to expose weight bias by telling a story with a character that people can sympathize with and relate to.
Lola came to be as this character.
Her story is our story.
Her friends became the people that we know. Sometimes...we are those friends.
Lola gives legitimacy to the issue of weight bias in the medical community while humanizing Lola's everywhere. Ultimately, I want Lola's story to encourage self-advocacy and celebrating the self-love we all need to develop as a tool to help against weight bias.
