LEAVE NO TRACE BRIGHTON
This documentary co-created by Daniel Satchell and Coral Evans about the beach-cleaning community group Leave No Trace Brighton has a massive potential for social and ecological impact both nationally and globally. First brainstormed in January 2023, this documentary has taken nearly 2 years to complete.
The film’s content is accessible and its production is dynamic and polished. We are shown how a small passionate community group, using a volunteer-led and multi-organisation partnership approach, can punch above its weight to facilitate significant and lasting change – in this case by clearing up the beaches of Brighton and perhaps more importantly, educating the public about the main drivers of coastal waste and advocating for these destructive practices to cease.
Commercial fishing vessels are exposed as one of the main culprits, responsible for a huge amount of rubbish in the form of abandoned nets, as well as devastation to wildlife.
The film is gorgeously edited, featuring an upbeat funky soundtrack (we are in Brighton after all!), great and easy to understand educational graphics, fun and innovative camera techniques, wonderful nature footage, and multiple interviews with locals and other stakeholders to give a holistic picture of the coastal waste problem along the English Channel and its impact on both humans and marine life.
Featuring:
Coral Evans: Director of Leave No Trace Brighton
Daniel Satchell: Filmmaker and local surfer
Zoe Lyons: Comedian
Representatives from the Salty Seabirds swimming group
Jade Roberts: A local lifeguard who provides incredible footage from her underwater sea swims
Thea Taylor: Insightful managing director of the Sussex Dolphin Project, speaking on the horrific harm done to dolphins and other sea creatures by fishing trawlers
Toby Mariner: A local bodyboarder, photographer and filmmaker
Steve Tapp: The Anglers Line Recycling Scheme
MyRefactory: Based in Hull, recycle all kinds of coastal waste into a variety of useful products, all the way from building materials to jewellery
Other locals and Leave No Trace volunteers are also interviewed
Additionally, we are shown possible remedies to the coastal waste problem, both short and long-term, including some really outside-of-the-box solutions!
For anyone interested in protecting the future of Britain’s biodiverse coastal waters as well as ensuring clean and safe beaches for future generations of holidaymakers and swimmers, this film is absolutely essential viewing.

DANIEL SATCHELL
Daniel Satchell is a passionate traveller, surfer, and filmmaker based in Brighton.
From his early 20s well into his mid-30s, he sought out opportunities to travel and work in diverse locations, leaving a profound impact on his life.
One of the most transformative experiences was in East Africa, particularly Kenya and Tanzania, where he volunteered at a children's orphanage and a turtle conservation project.
Daniel later found himself in South Africa, where he volunteered as a surf instructor before securing a senior graphic design role with a wine publication. His time in South Africa enriched his life and gave him confidence, and he eventually returned to Brighton, where travel continues to shape his worldview. The new experiences, cultures, and environments he encountered taught him invaluable lessons.
Surfing is Daniel's greatest passion, and he has turned his love for the sport into a creative outlet by producing a series of short films that showcase surfing in Brighton and share his personal experiences. He feels more at home in the water than on land, and his love for the natural environment has cultivated a strong commitment to environmental protection.
Daniel is dedicated to raising awareness about conservation efforts and inspires others to do their part. When the opportunity arose to collaborate with Coral at Leave No Trace Brighton for a film/documentary project focused on environmental awareness, he eagerly embraced it, blending his passions for filmmaking and environmental conservation.
CORAL EVANS
Coral Evans is a passionate photographer and environmentalist based in Brighton.
Born into a family with a deep commitment to environmental stewardship and a profound love for the ocean, Coral’s upbringing naturally influenced her future passions. She inherited her father’s enthusiasm for capturing the beauty of the natural world through photography, sparking a lifelong creative journey.
After a brief period working in the corporate sector in London, Coral relocated to Brighton in 2013 to fully embrace her passion for photography. Her work now centers on ocean-inspired themes, with a focus on action shots of surfing and sea swimming.
The COVID-19 lockdowns provided Coral with the space and motivation to deepen her commitment to environmental stewardship. With Brighton’s beaches left littered as locals flocked outdoors, she was struck by the urgent need for action. This inspired her to launch Leave No Trace Brighton, a community initiative dedicated to promoting cleaner coastlines and encouraging sustainable behaviors.
Through Leave No Trace Brighton, Coral found the perfect way to merge her creative talents with her environmental mission. Leave No Trace Brighton serves as a powerful platform to raise awareness, inspiring others to take action for the planet.
