LANRE'S DOOM
When a man hits a woman or is hit by a woman,, he is referred to as a coward but what do you call a woman who hits a man?
Lanre is a man totally in love with his wife that even the neighbours are envious of the frequent public display of affection by the couple. The whole house seems unable to sleep every night due to the noise emanating from their room as a result of their intercourse.
This frequent noise became a source of concern to the neighbours and they began to wonder -pleasure or pain? This concern for Lola drove the neighbours to the couples’ room late one night and there the story unfolds. Lola and Lanre both had excuses for their behaviour, who then should be called a coward? Who should be blamed - Lanre, Lola, or the society?!!
Through the plight of Lanre, we are made to understand the suffering of men because our culture doesn’t leave space for men to express their inner struggles. No human is immune to pain but holding back tears, refusing to open up about issues of concern because you are a man; isn’t that in itself doom?! Lanre’s doom comes in contrast with the stereotype concerning women being the only victims of domestic violence and encourages men to be human and not just men.
