Kubusa

Sunkavva is born to a family of stone-breaking workers in one of the villages in Bayalu seeme region of Karnataka. She had learnt the midwife work from her mother and chooses to continue it. She gets married to an irresponsible drunkard and ends up living alone. She returns to her parents' home and continues to be a midwife to earn her bread and butter. She works as a stone-breaker as well. Once when she is on midwife duty, she finds an orphan baby. As she had never experienced motherhood herself, she seeks help from other mothers to breast feed her child. She takes care of her child, provides education, and helps him to get a job. She gets him married to his lady love and sends them to the City for their livelihood. She continues to live in her Village and works as a stone-breaker. On the other hand, her son grows up to be successful and leads a comfortable life. He invites his mother to the City to live with him. However Sunkavva is hesitant. After about 10 years, her son Ramachandra pleads with her again. She finally agrees and moves to the city. For a woman who is used to get dressed in a saree without blouse, chewing betel leaves all the time, has the habit of open defecation, and lives close to nature, she finds it hard to get adjusted to City Life. In a civilized society, people find it awkward with her ways. She keeps getting into fights because of the culture difference. This creates havoc in the lives of her son, daughter-in-law and her granddaughter. Amidst all these, she tries to shower love and affection towards her family. But Sunkavva's behaviour with the other people of society, stirrs the peace at home. The story moves to an end with a question whether Sunkavva decides to stay with her son or chooses to move back to Village ?
