Other feature documentaries include , ’The Making of a Peace Activist’, ’Slavery and Colonialism’ and ‘Understanding Racism’.
He directed his first foreign language feature documentary, ‘Saints, Savo and Serbia’, tracing his father’s roots, the origins of the family from Bosnia in the mid 1700’s to their settlement up in the mountains of Stance, a village just outside of Kraljevo, sometime later. The documentary had its world premiere at at BelDocs, the Belgrade Documentary Film Festival in May 2019.
His latest feature documentary set during the Covid 19 pandemic, Savo recorded the heroic efforts undertaken to defend a small town in the heart of Serbia from a virus that threatened to take thousands of lives. He recorded incredible images of sacrifice, readiness, inventiveness, loss and joy, as a team of people, volunteers and professionals, experts and ordinary citizens, came together to defeat an invisible killer. Fear, will, determination, volunteerism, struggle, organization, activity, patriotism, self-actualization, sadness, pain, pride, hope, moba are the words that is best described in the feature-length documentary, “Kraljevo - a story of hope, in the time of corona during the state of emergency”. It is a unique account of an extraordinary time, and a reflection of what can be achieved when people come together and rise to a challenge.
"I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. I visited Serbia for the first time in 2010, I fell in love with Serbia and in 2019 I decided to stay. In January 2020, like most people around the world, I started following the news about the corona virus, watching what was happening in China, and like everyone, I was not too worried. I thought it was over there, not here. Then it got closer, all of a sudden, we were all talking about Italy and Europe. This was close to us. Every day, only news arrived about the growing number of infections and deaths, Italy was like a war zone. I panicked, I had to decide whether to stay or return to South Africa. Then all flights were cancelled and the whole world changed. Overnight, I remained detained in Kraljevo. The activities were limited to looking for masks, gloves, disinfectants ... All the projects I started at the beginning of the year were either cancelled or postponed. ”
As a filmmaker, Savo used his fear to motivate and so he started filming events in the city. Unknowingly, he would witness what can only be called an unusual fairy tale. A testimony of will, determination, volunteerism, struggle, organization, activity, patriotism, self-actualization, sadness, pain, pride, hope, above all a unique report of extraordinary time and a reflection of what can be achieved when people come together and respond to the challenge. This film consists of interviews and recordings of incredible feats of volunteerism, human empathy, strength and will, when people face an unknown and unseen enemy.
