Khwaab

Khwaab is short film which depicts a life of a young boy, who dared to put one step ahead for his dream but was pulled four steps back by the society, taboo and gender biased thinking. The boy aspired to be a classical dancer who now works at an ironing shop finds himself slipping into the past when he sees the outfit of a male classical dancer that he has to iron. He gets naturally drawn to trying the outfit and then comes out the classical dancer who knows nothing but the art. Lost in his own thoughts of the past he starts dancing with the music playing in his head but after a little while his mind starts playing the voices that discouraged him and pulled him down from achieving what he dreamt off. The boy finds himself in a solitude and is hit by the reality of him still being an ordinary who succumbed to the pressure and never dared to make his dream a reality.

Director Statement

One day while coming back from my college I saw an Ironer ironing some clothes, his face had many emotions at the time; Happy, Sorrow, Frustrated , etc. I came back home and I was just curious about stories of these people who we see and interact for our own work, we don’t know what they up to or why they are up to this, is it because of poverty? Compulsion? or anything else. They have a very important role in our day to lives and we don't even bother much about their lives. I wanted to explore what could be their story, and so by exploring my fascination towards their stories I found this one concept. But… but it had a small problem, it had no story behind it. It was just a concept. I kept thinking and thinking then suddenly I remembered the incident happened 13 years back when I was just 9 years old. A teenager who lived in my society wanted to be a classical dancer and he was also brilliant in it, everyday he used to practice on the terrace of society while me and my friends used to play on the other side of the terrace. On one fine day his father came up and beat him hard saying dance is not for men’s and he was ashamed of him being his son for doing this and ordered him to stop dancing. The teenager cried and begged to his father but he didn’t listen. So what? He eventually had to leave his dream and his passion because of a social stigma that classical dance is only for females. We live in 21st century yet we care about what people think about you and for that we are are ready to destroy ours as well as other’s dreams. That’s how we came up concept and the story of “Khwaab”. The short film shows the ideas from the both world’s, of Ironer whose dream just remain as a dream because of societal pressure. That’s the whole point of making this short film. At the end I would just put up this quote “Believe in your dreams even when they seems to be lost” fight till the end because as Lord Krishna said in Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 3; Verse 08 “Action is indeed inaction” I hope you enjoy the film. -Mangesh Rangnekar, Sujoy Sawant
