Summer with Josephine

"Perhaps it was also the heat of the summer, the echo of the waves against the earth, the jagged rocks stacked along the shore."

On a day of dreamy melancholy, a young woman relives the intensity of a summer spent with Josephine.
We are not sure why, but Josephine never speaks. Yet the days pass, each one different from the next, in an atmosphere as dilated, thick and somewhat surreal as the summer heat. These moments spent together weave a unique, slightly ambiguous and unforgettable relationship between the two women.

The short film for Italian brand Kate Cate's SS22, shot in June 21 in the southeastern region of Sicily, is a eulogy to Ingmar Bergman's style in "Persona", with a touch of Truffaut's "Jules et Jim".

Director Statement

When Caterina asked me to shoot something for the new Kate Cate collection I was excited and I said yes right away.
It happened that some days before I was watching for the 10th time the Ingmar Bergman masterpiece Persona, from 1966, and I was thinking how wonderful would have been to do something linked to the film for a fashion campaign.

When Caterina contacted I knew this was the project. Hats, belts, bags and boots…perfect products to reproduce the stylish framing composition of Bergman’s film.
The BIG part was where to shoot it?
Since in Persona the framing composition is mostly shaped between characters and nature, we needed to find a similar place, but Sweden is far…
Thanks to past experiences, we knew that the south-eastern part of Sicily had some similarity in terms of richness of diverse places.
Of course we skipped the Sicilian-Barocco, that would have been the furthest thing from “bergmanian style”.

For what concerns the editing, to reproduce also the editing-style of Bergman would have been difficult, if not impossible. Something of my editing style reminded me of Truffaut’s Jules et Jim. Probably that was also due to my choice to shot the campaign in French (a language that I know for sure better than Swedish). So, instead of “escaping” from that idea…I enhanced it.
