Karma Gaabo Re.

Spread across Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh, the Baiga Tribe has seen its population decline over time. Displaced from their ancestral lands in the 1960s, they have struggled to preserve their traditions in a rapidly evolving world. Yet, deep in the villages of Lagma and Bandhatola, Madhya Pradesh. The echoes of their past still live on, woven into their songs, dances, and unwavering bond with nature.
Karma Gaabo Re, the documentary film offers a rare, intimate glimpse into the Baiga’s way of life, capturing their beliefs, rituals, and the deeper meaning behind their music and dance. More than just performances, these art forms are their way of storytelling, expressing joy, sorrow, and their connection to the land they revere. Film follows a raw, observational approach, unfolding the story naturally, coming from the Baiga itself, in their own rhythm.

“Karma Gaabo Re” means “Let’s sing karma” in English. Karma is a song sung by baiga tribe.

Director Biography - Shubham Neware

Shubham Neware is a filmmaker, photographer, and visual artist from Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, India. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Communication Design from the National Institute of Design, Bhopal, where he explored diverse forms of storytelling, from expressive strokes to cinematic frames.

Deeply passionate about moving images, Shubham is drawn to the art of documenting stories, valuing the creative process as much as the final piece. His storytelling is open and intuitive, delving into themes of individuals, communities, nature, wildlife, and culture. His work bridges the gap between tradition and contemporary storytelling, preserving narratives that are often overlooked.

His debut documentary, Karma Gaabo Re, is the first-ever cinematic documentation of Baiga tribe music, capturing its raw essence through an observational approach. Shubham spent over a year living with the Baiga community, documenting their songs, rituals, and displacement struggles. His immersive and raw approach to filmmaking is also evident in his earlier work, 4742: The Jeeps of Bhopal, the first-ever documentary capturing the unique jeep culture of Bhopal.

Director Statement

‘Karma Gaabo Re’ is not just a film; it’s a journey into the forgotten rhythms of the Baiga tribe. I wanted to capture their music not as an artifact but as a living, breathing expression of their existence, one that is slowly fading away. Spending months in their villages, I realized how deeply music is woven into their identity. This documentary is my attempt to preserve their songs and stories before they disappear. It is an ode to their resilience, their art, and their spirit.
