Soon to Come - Justice for Women - The story of Cologne's New Year's Eve - Die Kölner Silvesternacht

On New Year's Eve 2015, more than thousend young women have been sexual harassed, sexual assaulted or robbed in Cologne/Germany in front of Cologne Central Station. Some of the women were also raped. Most of the perpetrators were young men.

"One of the victims, identified only as Katja L, told the Kölner Express: “When we came out of the station, we were very surprised by the group we met, which was made up only of foreign men … We walked through the group of men, there was a tunnel through them, we walked through … I was groped everywhere. It was a nightmare. Although we shouted and hit them, they men didn’t stop. I was horrified and I think I was touched around 100 times over the 200 metres.” " (The Guardian, 5th January 2016)

In the weeks after this New Year's Eve, 1210 women filed charges at the police or the general prosecutor. Among the suspects were many young men from North African Countries. Until today, only 36 perpetrators have been sentenced by justice. Even in a so called failed state, I wouldn't have expected this - and I definitely wouldn't have expected this in Germnay

Remark - The Film Poster: Some days after New Years' Eve 2015, one of the suspects was controlled by the police near Cologne Central. He had this german/arabic translation note with him and also videos of the assaults on his mobile. The notes mean, for ex.: Big tits; I want to fuck; I kill you. Also this suspect was neither accused nor sentenced by Justice...

Director Statement

In the early morning of 1st January 2016, I went home from a party around 3 AM and had to change subway at Cologne Central. There, many groups of young men were hanging around; the atmosphere was rather aggressive. Also some young women were at the station. I got the impression that they had experienced bad things. No police officers at all were patrolling the scene. Later that day, the radio brought a report of what had happened...

At that time, I worked as a lawyer, so I filed a charge at the General Prosecutor Cologne - it took until November 2017, until the General Prosecutor even answered me - he dismissed the charge...
