Just Like You - Anxiety + Depression
8 brave kids, an Emmy award winning journalist and a clinical psychologist at Columbia University take on the fear and stigma plaguing the mental health community by immersing us in life with an anxiety disorder and depression in a way that leaves us enlightened, empowered and equipped to either live life or lift up life for those with these challenging and even life threatening conditions. We are losing too many of our children, friends and family living with anxiety disorders and depression to death by suicide. The stars in this film are faced with a challenge. They are striving to help us overcome our deeply ingrained fears, concerns and stigma about anxiety disorders and depression. The ones that prevent us from being able to relate, support and be friends with kids like Allie, Dylan, Jana, Morgan and Michael. They are utilizing the power of film to provide a clear blueprint for us to support people living with an anxiety disorder and depression and prevent death by suicide. This film will save lives.

At Just Like You Films, we are approached with many film ideas and we have to make the hard choice of which kids' stories into which we will pour our resources. Projects come to us in the form of impassioned parents or inspired leaders of organizations who are willing to run the marathon of fundraising, producing and distributing a film to create a kinder world for the kids they are championing. Just Like You - Anxiety + Depression was no different. It had incredible momentum from the very beginning. On a personal level, I see this project as a filmmaker, but I also engage with it from the prospective of a parent. In our family we live with obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress syndrome and depression. I come to this project as a concerned citizen, too. My local community and has been hit hard in recent years by the epidemic of death by suicide. We are losing too many to these diseases. And, I feel a personal sense of urgency to take a closer look, learn about, understand and most importantly accept anxiety disorders and depression as a serious medical concern and help end the stigma that our society unfortunately has around taking care of our mental health. Suicide prevention begins with the stories we tell ourselves and others about life with anxiety disorder and depression. We can’t wait for you to hear these stories firsthand in JLYF’s first feature length documentary film. Together we can help end the stigma around mental health and create a kinder, more empathetic world for us all through the power of film.
