Juliana Reza is a 24-year-old mixed media artist from Malaysia that started her creative journey at the ripe age of 3, drawing obese dinosaurs and anatomically incorrect family portraits. This love for artistic expression turned to an interest for photography, graphic design, and painting, which are skills she now uses to her advantage in set design or props making. She has 4 years of production experience working on sets as a first assistant director or art director for several local short films, commercials, and features to expand her skills and creativity. She has spent the last two years working on her own projects whilst completing her degree of BA (Hons) Film Production. Producing short films, spec ads, and documentaries in order to experiment with different styles of storytelling, moving from genre to genre from comedy, drama and horror. As a person, she comes from a multiracial family with different backgrounds and beliefs. Her upbringing has become her motivation to further push herself into the role of an aspiring director, in order to create stories that would help tear down the gaps society has when it comes to differences. This was the base for her short film ‘Rojak (Mixed)’, about a mixed-raced fictional character as she navigates life in a religiously fueled country. It won two gold awards at the 2023 Kancil Awards for “Best Idea Most Likely to Get This Show Banned” and “Best Use of Cultural Insights”.
