Il-hwan is a filmmaker based in Seoul who has been studying landscape architecture at Sungkyunkwan university since 2019. He has been working on films and visual art, with landscape images as the central focus. In 2021, he established and has been running a Cinephile experimental film club called "Lothringen" in Seoul. He directed an experimental landscape documentary titled "The Unjoy of Learning" as his first film, and he also modified and transformed "The Unjoy of Learning" into a 3-channel video installation, which was exhibited in several art spaces in Seoul.
The name "Lothringen" is borrowed from the film of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, and its primary purpose is to study relatively unknown personal films or films that have not been introduced in Korea. Several young Cinephiles in Seoul, who have grown up as part of the digital generation, gather to assist each other in their individual filmmaking endeavors through Lothringen.
