Choi Jong-koo majored in genetics, but his long-time dream was to become a comic artist. He was studying drawing to pursue his dream when he came across “AKIRA,” a 1988 animation by Katsuhiro Otomo. For Choi, the animation was shockingly refreshing, which made him decide to go to Japan to study animation. After finishing his studies, he worked in the character industry for a while. Then, out of nowhere, he opened an Italian restaurant, which he eventually had to shut down. He debuted as a screenwriter with the black comedy feature film “Moodori” (2006). It was his first screenplay, which took him just three days to write. At last, fter a long time wandering, he realized that he was naturally born to write stories. Since then, he has develop his career by participating in the script of the tvN sci-fi historical series “Joseon X-Files: Secret Book” (2010) and the screenplay of “R2B: Return to Base” (2011), directed by Kim Dong-won. Choi also wrote and directed the VR short film “The Secret of Ventriloquist” (2019) and the short film “Psychic Chef” (2020). He wrote and directed the independent feature films “The Namesake” (2019) and “Steely Lovers” (2024). His works also include publications such as the children’s story “Urban Expedition: Jeonju” (2018) and the novel “Secret Agent Chef of Joseon” (2022). He continues to expand his creative world by writing for TV series and films, as well as directing and producing films.
