Horror is a genre that women invented, and women remain one of the most vital and frightening parts of it. Scream queens, final girls, bloodthirsty creatures. My work is tied to the idea that horror is humanity.
Jo Gaffney is a 21 year old queer director and photographer based in Vancouver, BC. She has produced and directed over 16 short films, many of which have received nominations at both local and international festivals. Her work is known for having a strong surrealist feel, with elements of suburban gothic horror, while maintaining a focus on how personal stories can elevate concepts and themes into universal stories. She focuses on elevating the personal into the universal in her work because for art to be meaningful the audience needs to be able to relate to the story that is told but also to each other.
