Jhaanki mandap
What *rap* once was for the blacks in america, *Jhaanki* was too, for the mill workers of indore, it served as a voice for the city's working class, especially during the shutdown of mills, depicting stark imagery like ‘hanged workers and workers lying on railway tracks’. However, as these themes upset the authorities, they soon imposed control, shifting the focus to religious, cultural, and patriotic themes. Today, with rare exceptions like this year's tribute to the RG Kar Medical College protest, *jhaankis* are largely celebratory, marking 101 years of tradition on the eve of Anant Chaturdashi, reflecting a shift from protest to cultural expression. One could tag it as a collective cultural expression on a hyperlocal level, where the expression becomes the festival.
