Mbah Mugi was a coachman (driver of andong) who has been a pioneer since he was 15 years old. Mbah Mugi was a senior and the coachman group leader in his town. With the carriage now over 100 years old, Mbah Mugi struggled to provide for his family.
55 years of working as a coachman makes Mbah Mugi feel the rigor of a struggle. Because of his love for andong as his culture and profession, he never gave up. Mbah Mugi who held to his principles as a believer even had his own prayers for the continuation of his profession. Mbah Mugi also continues to do a sacred ritual which has existed since the previous generations before.
Mbah Mugi and his family tend their horses like human beings. He never treated the horses arbitrarily. All Mbah Mugi’s treatment of his horses seemed to break the entire civil statement about animal abuse by the coachman.
He hopes that andong can continue to survive in the era of globalization. His ability and perseverance were passed down to his son, Supri. Like her father, he was persistent in continuing Mbah Mugi’s work as a coachman. Once his work was over, now Supri handed all his work to his subordinate named Maryono. Today Maryono is the one who handles the horse at the same time as the coachman of all the Mbah Mugi’s horses.
Mbah Mugi represents a dream for all coachman nowadays. Work from the heart to boost the family economy. Mbah Mugi now lives with his son who has given jobs to a coachman in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
