The great exodus to the west in 1944
was a mass escape of Estonians
from the invading Red Army
from Estonia in the late summer and autumn of 1944.
They thought they would leave their homes temporarily,
for a few months to a year.

When, over time, it became apparent
that they could no longer return,
they decided to stay to the country they escaped to or relocated
to new locations around the world.
