John-Michael Powell (JM) is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker with a passion for telling bold, elevated stories across genres. As a writer-director, JM recently wrapped production on Violent Ends, a thriller starring Billy Magnussen, Alexandra Shipp, James Badge Dale, Kate Burton, Nick Stahl and Ray McKinnon. JM previously directed The Send-Off, starring Zachary Ray Sherman, which won the audience award at Jeff Nichols’ film festival, Filmland, and earned JM a Panavision New Filmmakers grant.
Before launching his directorial career, JM was an acclaimed editor on projects such as Netflix’s hit series from Justin Simien, Dear White People, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Amazon series Sausage Party: Foodtopia, a very funny Amazon pilot from Lord & Miller that never saw the light of day, Diane Bell’s award-winning Obselidia (Sundance), a film that earned two Spirit Award nominations, The Duplass Brothers Young Hearts (Slamdance), All the Wilderness (SXSW), It Happened in L.A. (Sundance), Bleeding Heart (Tribeca), Women is Losers (SXSW) and the Netflix docu-series American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing, for which JM earned an Emmy Award for Outstanding Editing in a Documentary.
JM co-founded Midnight Road Entertainment, a production company based in Los Angeles, California. Midnight Road’s current slate includes the upcoming Netflix Chronicles of Narnia films directed by Greta Gerwig.
In addition to his creative endeavors, JM is a devoted father of two boys, Jack and Max, a husband to his amazing wife, Sabrina, and a cancer survivor with a dark sense of humor; a dangerous combo.
