I've Got Crabs

I've always been drawn to crustaceans because they are often just pretty insane creations. The decorator crabs are especially fun. They'll pick up just about anything and carry it around their whole life for protection and camouflage. Every species seems to have something that makes it special whether its behavior or decoration. Hopefully this film captures some of the fun I have watching and filming them.

Director Biography - Dennis Deavenport

Professionally, I am a retired research chemist. However, I have many interests and skills in the areas of art, music, and technology. It seems an odd combination but it works for me and I'm happy with this mixture. I started taking UW photographs almost from the beginning of my diving in the early 1990s. Most of my cameras have been Canon SLRs in Ikelite housings and using Ikelite strobes. Recently, after being seduced by video, I started trying video using my SLR but have also moved to GoPros and my newest Olympus E-M1 MK II in a Nauticam housing. This last combination is my current focus. I joined the Houston Underwater Photographic Society in 1997 and have served in a variety of roles including president, vice president, photo contest chairman, workshop coordinator, board member, and an occasional trip leader. I have won numerous HUPS annual photo contests and one annual photo contest at Captain Dons in Bonaire. I have been a member of the Texas Gulf Coast Council for years and have been awarded their Neptune award numerous times, the Lifetime Achievement award, and Member of the Year. Diving with cameras offers me the ability to test my creativity and to connect with other underwater photographers and videographers. Helping others gain or polish skills is also something I seriously enjoy. Teaching is an important role that I take very seriously.

Director Statement

Creating films from my underwater video clips is tremendously satisfying and exciting. Not only does it push me to learn more but it allows me the ability to tell stories that appeal to most of the senses. The creation process is what attracts me most because of my background in art, music, and technology. Every time I sit down with my clips and start editing, I learn something about the process, and perhaps more importantly, something about myself.
