Every winter, my right hand becomes very dry and itchy and the feeling is very unbearable. It eventually gets to the point that I would take take extreme measures to relieve the itch. This would often include scratching until I bleed, rubbing my hands on objects (resulting in rashes), or holding my hand under hot water.
Essentially, it was these personal experiences that gave me the idea to make Itch. However, in this case, the protagonist would go to the most extreme lengths, to very bloody results. Probably a very obvious influence on Itch is Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead 2, since it is essentially a “splatstick” story. My original screenplay for the film had a lot more blood than what was eventually filmed. However, it was made up for by an excellent lead performance by my star Sean C. Dwyer, who was completely committed to this role and helped bring my idea to life in more ways than I can imagine. In fact, there were a few scenes, where I feared he was a little TOO into the role, especially when it came to using the (very real) meat cleaver in the climatic moments.
