My name is Alex Deijmann and I am a dancer, choreographer and improvisational performer from Rotterdam.
Besides training contemporary dance in Codarts and later AHK I have trained a lot in hiphop/street styles, focussing primarily on popping. Additionally I try to supplement this with styles of martial arts that I have learned from. My goal for this kind of training was to build a unique movement style and language better suited for dynamic changes in movement quality and speed.
Most of my choreographic works centred around themes of humanity and the psychology of being human, the limitations, the possibilities, the good sides and the bad. I am especially interested in exploring the more dark parts of human psychology and society.
In this very short film I tried to explore and express the sense of Isolation. All of the material in this video was made during a complete lockdown in Belgium, banning travel, work, art, commerce and all other public activities. It was during this time that for many, including myself, the word “Isolation” got new meanings and sensations associated with it. This, combined with the uncertainty of what will come next leaves one floating on the stream of time and events, seemingly unable to do anything other than to introspect what Isolation is.
