Iron City: 1978

EPISODES 1 - 3 (15 Mins in length max per episode in a 43 minute combined video for judging purposes)

Iron City; once called Melbourne - but that was before the war. Since the Axis Powers won WW2 Australia has fallen under Nazi rule. It is now 1978. The Nazi Party has ousted their former allies and Melbourne is now a city ruled by despots in which Australians, Italians and the Japanese alike are oppressed. But a revolt is brewing. Mysterious, eccentric characters lurk around every corner. The Twin Valkyries; a pair of female assassins wreaking havoc on the Nazi Generals and guards. The Tinkerer; a man with no past, who has a finger in every pie he can get at, pulling strings behind the scenes - but whose side is he on? The Architect; the woman manufacturing the capacity for the Italians and Japanese to regain their status. The Last Russian; a tech giant who lives as a phantom, being the only man with the secrets to the most powerful weapon in the city. All of these characters, along with the Rebellion forming in the slums make up the complex workings of a city transformed by one war and now on the brink of another.

Director Statement

Since film school I've always had this grand idea for an Australian Sci Fi movie which is Iron City. But when you have little film experience you start to think that your idea is unreachable. The budget may be too big, the cast members might not see the same idea's and let alone finding a solid film crew. But after i finished film school and participated and made a few feature films i realized that it's not impossible. There are just certain stories that we can tell on a smaller scale no matter what the budget is. I've always learned to write my scripts without restrictions, if i want a boat in the scene, done. If i want fancy cars, done! I just need to get past that mentality where i was thinking that it will cost too much to film.

Being an admirer of John Carpenter and all of his work i grew my self to adapt some of his style of film making which is where i get my traits from today. I loved Escape from New York, i loved the Thing, i loved Prince of Darkness. It's what defined my childhood going to video stores and renting all these films (not knowing that they were all made by John Carpenter at the time). It was just fun to watch! It was fantasy.

So Iron City: 1978 has a lot of traits and similarities to John Carpenter-esk type film making and story lines. Many characters are involved no matter how big or small because it's about creating this world, this universe. It may be alternate reality but it couldn't be more further than the real thing "if" certain things went the way it did back in WW2. So that's where we get to fantasize what Australia could of been like in this Nazi ruled world around the times between 1960-1980. Yes the story's history drives from very serious matters but we get to apply today's political agendas, sexuality and ideology. But we also get to have fun by presenting this nature in a animated/retro style.
