In the Field
A beautiful field where magic can happen; things are lost and then found again. 'In the Field' tells the story of a father and son, painfully separated but never really apart.

An Australian based in India, Julian grew up on a cinematic diet of the Australian New Wave, genre film and international art cinema. More recently, his fascination with Indian cinema has grown, and he finds particular excitement in exploring the South Indian, especially Malayalam, cinematic form. His work engages with this vernacular while continuing to interrogate his own familiarity with a predominantly western canon.
For my debut, I have chosen to make a Malayalam film situated firmly within the cultural context of Kerala. Kerala, along with many other Indian states, has a rich history of cinema and its own distinctive cinematic vernacular. Rather than imitate this cinema, I have used it as a starting point to build a fresh perspective both narratively and cinematically.
My collaborators are veterans of the Malayalam cinema and bring an inimitable Malayalam flavour to the finished film. At the same time, I'm interested in how my own position as a cultural outsider interacts with the milieu in which I work. I hope this synthesis of influences is intriguing for both Malayalam and international audiences.
