Experiencing Interruptions?

Interview with a Sorority Girl

Interview with a Sorority Girl is an adaptation of the film Interview with a Vampire. We decided to turn the film into a comedy film and to make it involve college students instead. We wanted to involve a sorority girl who is obsessed with her sorority and the interviewer a journalism major. We decided to use the scene of the interview to adapt into our film. The interviewer is not too keen on the sorority as the sorority girl but she is keen on the interview going well. The journalism major Macey, runs a blog where she publishes different interviews of people she meets. The sorority girl Lauren, just cares about her life getting shown on the blog and that her sorority gets attention. There is a sense of awkwardness between them and a sense of discomfort. We wanted to show how they met randomly outside their apartment complex and that Macey believes that both of them don’t know each other even through Lauren has seen her before. We wanted the key scenes from the movie to be represented in our movie but with a comedic twist. With the interview taking place in Lauren’s house we learn more about her character but we explain Macey’s character more at the beginning. I worked as cinematographer on this film. I made a shot list that properly showed how each character would appear at the beginning that kind of hints to their backstories. I made sure there was a sense of randomness in how they met and made sure to capture Macey’s awkwardness. I showed how they ran into each other and how Lauren would fit the stereotypical sorority girl by sun tanning and how Macey had a more serious tone to her with the interview. I also had to make sure key props were shown like the Kappa Kappa Data Zeta letters and sparkly decorations. I also edited this film, I made sure to keep in their reactions to show how awkward Macey felt and how Lauren was just happy to share her story. How she didn’t take a hint Macey was not enjoying the interview and how she was surprised Macey left. I also changed the white balance in Lauren’s place to have this sort of pinkish tint to go with the sparkly pink theme in the apartment. I added tracking shots in places like at the beginning because I wanted to show how they ran into each other and show Macey leaving her car to show how they both live in this apartment complex. I added the establishing shot of Macey parking because I decided that it would be more going on than her just walking up to Lauren. I studied the script and made a shot list that corresponded to it. I wanted to have a sort of comedic pacing so I let some shots run on longer to show reactions. I also had to edit the scene when Lauren reveals what is under her glasses properly to capture each of their reactions and show how Lauren is totally chill with her makeup choice. I had to make sure to capture Macey leaving without getting her out of frame and then Lauren talking to her as she leaves. I edited between close up shots and wider shots to show how they are both in the room and for the audience to get a sense of the decorations and what type of place this is. I had to portray how Lauren couldn’t take a hint that Macey was slowly getting annoyed by making sure I had close-ups of the glitter and of Lauren explaining to Macey how she is trying to recruit her to the sorority. Choosing a handheld approach was not exactly by choice because we forgot the tripod but it allowed for a more personal approach. I chose to use low angles to show Lauren sun tanning and higher angles to show Macey talking to her. I wanted it to seem like Lauren was stuck in her ways and would not change them anytime soon. The angles looking up at Macey showed the POV of what Lauren is seeing when she talks to her.
