Inside Nigerian Community Living the Climate Crisis

The work explored the intersecting impacts of climate change in the Kwanni community of Sokoto State, Northwest Nigeria, and how inequities are hurting the most vulnerable residents.
Kwanni represents an area of extreme inequities. The living conditions in the community are challenging -polluted water, poor air quality, erosion, and floods affecting life in the community, which has many of the most vulnerable populations in Sokoto city.
Most Kwanni residents are low-income; there are scarce resources to adapt and prepare for climate change effectively.
The story, with local voices at the centre of reporting, is a deep dive into an area already experiencing multiple impacts of climate change with an avalanche of human suffering.
It looks at how climate change affects water quality and availability, socioeconomic activities, and air quality.
The story also assessed the responses to climate change in the community and shared the perspectives of the community members/leaders on their problems and the government officials on solutions.
