Director Biography - Edoardo Novello

Born in Venice in 1995, Edoardo has always been a great moviegoer, seeing the movie theatres as the only escape from his daily routine and boring childhood. He first read a screenwriting manual during a gap year after high school, while he was supposed to be studying chemistry. This first book, Screenplay by Syd Field, interested him so much that he decided to follow his heart and apply to a BFA in Film Studies at the University of Bologna in Italy. During this time, he attended a 6-Week Filmmaking Workshop at the New York Film Academy in Florence. This experience helped him to develop those filmmaking basis that he used to win a Scholarship provided by his University on that same year. On that occasion, he presented a medium-length documentary called "Encounters”, where he interviewed the underage psychiatric patients of the Italian Private Hospital Villa Igea. He then graduated in 2019 with a film thesis on Terrence Malick's filmography, "Malick and the world-system. The basics of the contemporary epic", a study which compared the Director's works to Franco Moretti's study of "world-system" works like "Faust" or "Ulysses".
In 2019 he directed the short film "Image-Time", a work which related Bazin's film theories to the human perception of time. Thanks to this film he has been admitted to Chapman University in America where he is now attending an MFA in Film Production with Directing Emphasis.
Determined to become a film director, Edoardo worked also as a film critic for the Italian journal "*About" and as Film Festival Assistant Artistic Director at the 15th Edition of the Biografilm Festival in Italy.

Director Statement

Jean Epstein famously said that the cinema has the power “to reveal the unknown beauty in daily life” and I truly believe that. This for me is not just art, but a medium which can contain the world in itself, a mirror of it. It doesn’t matter the genre I am approaching or the type of story I am writing. What I find fundamental is to create a world with realistic characters, characters who hide in their own fears, hopes, dangerous and fantastic thoughts. Characters who might seem simple just at the surface but have deeper layers. Characters as real as the person sitting next to us, as ourselves. Microcosms of life.
My will is to find a new stronger deeper way to tell the world about itself.
