In The Footsteps of Li-Yuan Chia and Delia Derbyshire
An immersive moving image short (8:44min duration). A meditation honouring the friendship and creative working relationships Madelon Hooykaas had with the late artists Li-Yuan Chia and Delia Derbyshire (the woman behind the Dr Who theme).
Drawing from images, text and sound by LYC and DD including footage from Madelon’s own archival collection and footage from The Hubble Telescope. The basic structure of the moving image comes from the previous video work ‘Point in Time’ by Stansfield/Hooykaas. It is inspired by the Japanese concept used in Ikebana: TEN – CHI- JIN, meaning sky-earth-person.
Caro C's sensitive soundtrack uses piano, prepared piano (including ping pong ball in piano), found sounds, voice and electronics. The ping pong ball is a reference to the 3 way table tennis table at LYC Museum and the found sounds are of course a nod to Delia's music concrete tape techniques. Delia also composed a piano score (Two Houses, Elizabeth Kosmian, 1980) which surprised many when she was known as an electronic music composer.
Madelon worked with both Delia Derbyshire ('About Bridges', 1975 and 'One of These Days', 1973) and Li-Yuan Chia, who also worked with Delia Derbyshire at his LYC Museum in Cumbria, UK in the 1970's. After meeting via Delia Derbyshire Day 2016, Madelon invited Caro C to provide the sound and music for this homage to these fellow artists.

Madelon Hooykaas (born Maartensdijk, 1942) ought to be acknowledged as one of the most representative visual artists in Europe for her enduring and pioneering experimentation in contemporary art. Since the 1960s, Hooykaas has developed a rigorous artistic practice and visual research in photography and film, installation and video, interactive and performance art. Her works revolve around the recurring themes of physical and human landscapes, water and light, memory and mindfulness, loss and abstraction, minimalism and formalism.
Hooykaas has collaborated with several well know composers and musicians like Delia Derbyshire, Louis Andriessen, Frances-Marie Uitti Ab Baars and Justin Bennet to create films and video installations.
From 1972 to 2004 Hooykaas collaborated with Elsa Stansfield (born Glasgow, 1945, died Amsterdam 2004) under the widely acclaimed artistic partnership Stansfield/Hooykaas. They worked at the forefront of video and video environments/installations as a new art form and went on to exhibit internationally. Their work is in many prestigious public and private collections across Europe and the USA including the Tate, London; MuHKA, Antwerp; GOMA, Glasgow, MOMA, New York, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
Hooykaas lives and works in Amsterdam.

During the project ‘In the footsteps of Li-Yuan Chia and Delia Derbyshire’ it was our challenge to bring back the past to the present moment. As a visual artist and film maker I frequently visited Delia and Li between 1975 and 1977 in their homes and the LYC museum in the inspiring landscape of North Cumbria in England. My solo exhibition (May 1977) in the L.Y.C. Museum of my series of silkscreens ‘The Time - machine’, a dialogue with time and space’ made my connection to Li even stronger. Later on that year in November Stansfield/Hooykaas had the unique opportunity to bring the five monitor audio/video installation ’Horizontal Flow’ to the museum. This film project threfore is not only a tribute to Delia and Li, but also refers to my own footsteps in this landscape.
To collaborate with Caro, an electronic music composer/sound designer who is an expert on Delia Derbyshire, was an inspiring challenge for both of us. With this project we take the memory of these two artists into the now. By doing so this project hopes to inspire the present generation who is very interested in the moving image and electronic sound.
