Director Biography - Tom Botterill

The films I have worked on as a Director include an experimental documentary, ANIMUS (2022), that focused on the mental health and the feelings that come out of artistic expression.

As well as this, I also directed an experimental film titled "What's going on in there?" that highlights inner monologues and how our thoughts and memories can shift and change and how they affect and can be affected by our mental health.

I also took part in the Straight 8 filmmaking competition where I created my film "In The Dog-House" which was all shot with one canister of Super 8 film and shot in chronological order.

Director Statement

As a Director, I always look at the characters first. That is my way into a story and making sure they're relatable and that the story's themes can flow through them is how I approach filmmaking. If the audience cares about the characters as much as I do then the rest can come from there. I want to highlight themes of identity, mental health and resilience in my films whilst balancing comedic and dramatic tones to make my films heartfelt yet universally engaging.
