Director Biography - Candice Nachman

I've been using a camera to capture stories since I began studying photography in 2000. I was fortunate to learn on 35mm film and develop in the dark room for nearly 10 years. I grew up in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. I was definitely one of those kids that would tell tall tales and sang songs to myself on the playground. I was the first in my family to finish high school and I moved to Denver where I received my BFA in Photography from Metropolitan State University in 2010.

After a lifetime of image making, music playing. and traveling I finally thought to put all those talents to use and applied to graduate film school. I only applied to one, even though all my friends thought I was crazy. But I got in. I cried so hard when I got that phone call. I packed my bags and was off to California.

I received my MFA in Film Directing from University of California Los Angeles in 2016 where I received several awards from the Jack Nicholson Distinguished Student Director Award, Hollywood Foreign Press Association Award and the Edi and Lew Wassermann Award. I currently reside in Los Angeles where I get to run a small production company called, Spin the Dial, with my partner, Robert Nachman where we make short films, feature documentaries, commercial projects and music videos.

Director Statement

IN LOVE was created for the Straight 8 Film competition. The film is my humorous take on my experience of love. Shot on a single roll of Super8mm film, all edits done in camera, and the soundtrack was created entirely separately and without watching final film. Yes, seriously. We had to shoot the roll of film and submit it to Straight 8 undeveloped and create the audio separate and without seeing the film for reference! The first time I saw my film with the soundtrack was at the premiere in Cannes! I loved creating this film because it represents film making in some of its most pure state, just honest, spontaneous, and no double takes!
