Jytte De Taeye was born in 1999 in Wetteren, Belgium. Since she was a child she was already interested in drawing and animation films. During high school she followed diction, ballet, contemporary dance and drama lessons after school. She graduated in 2017 and after that she started studying Physical therapy at the University of Ghent because she was fascinated by movement. After one year she realized that she would rather pursue design and illustrating. So in 2018 she started a bachelor Visual design at Luca school of Arts in Ghent. In 2021 she chose to make an animated title sequence for an animate series called The Lumire the return of Light for her bachelor project and realized that she really loved making animation but only knew the basics. So after graduating that same year she decided to start learning animation at LUCA School of Arts in Brussels. In her first year, her animated teaser Flashlight Eyes was chosen to be screened at the Anima film festival 2022. In 2022 she made her first animated short film Fluttering. Fluttering is a narrative fiction about a girl who goes on a date but then transforms into animals according to her emotional state. After her bachelor she decides that she would prefer to make films that aren’t linear stories and have more of dreamlike quality. In 2023 she finishes her masterfilm “In Absence of Light”.
I made In Absence of Light when I was going through a dark time myself, I experienced imposter syndrome and didn’t believe in myself, I also experienced grief as my grandfather died who introduced me to animation, also my pet who I’ve had since elementary died. This film is my grieving process as well as acceptance of how dark times make me grow as a person emotionally and spiritually and with this film I hope to encourage anyone dealing with darkness in their life at the moment.
