Stephen Chang works as a software engineer by day and pursues his passion for directing and acting by night. His love for filmmaking began in the 8th grade when he started creating and publishing skits and short films on his YouTube channel. However, he chose to put this passion on hold during high school and college to focus on his studies. In his final semester of college, Stephen reignited his creative pursuits—auditioning for and landing the role of Jim O'Connor in a college production of "The Glass Menagerie", taking acting classes in Seattle, and writing, directing, and starring in his first short film, "I'm Okay."
I was 14 when my mom passed away from lung cancer. It was one of the hardest experiences that could ever happen to any child of that age—but the grief didn’t end there. The weight of medical bills pressed down on us, turning sorrow into a quiet, constant strain. I created "I'm Okay" to highlight the harsh realities of the American medical system. Through its lighting and framing, the film reflects the isolation, loneliness, and fear felt by those caught in its grip.
