Salt in the soul
The documentary tells the lives of Sicilian fishermen, specifically in the locations of Porticello and Aspra, and the figures that revolve around their world. The focus of the project is the intimate, discreet, and passionate exploration of the fishermen, their villages, and their love for their land—a warm and fragrant Sicily.
The story narrates the daily life of fishermen, sometimes solitary, in their rituals and difficulties. A community that develops on the sea and transforms into legends, pagan rites, and sacredness.
The fishing fleet of Porticello is the largest in terms of the number of boats in Sicily, though it is less known compared to that of Mazara del Vallo. Porticello boasts a local tradition characterized by the absolute freedom to work without being tied to large multinational fishing companies, maintaining a fishing community with a strong local character.
With this documentary, I wish to pay homage to Maestro Guttuso, born in Bagheria, one of the places where some scenes were filmed. I have found today the same locations, the same atmospheres, colors, traditions, and characters that the Maestro painted, and I have incorporated in some scenes the names and situations inspired by his works.

Luca Noris, Neapolitan. His career as an established filmmaker led him to become Brand Ambassador of Sony and Fujifilm. He ventures in the world of sports, particularly of Taekwondo, where he established himself as director and point of reference for both the Italian and global Federation of Taekwondo. Following this, he started a career as director in the world of documentaries for different industries, working for the largest largest multinational companies in the world. Since 2009, he directed various documentaries with a social focus, including the documentary “For All Father”, shot in Rwanda, about the life and mission of Father Hermann Schulz during the tragic period of the Rwandan Genocide. In 2010 he traveled to China to produce “At the Home of Turandot,” a musical documentary that chronicled the rehearsals of the Opera Concert of Puccini’s “Turandot” for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the People’s Party of China, with the theatrical direction of the great chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, and the Orchestral direction of Maestro Janos Acs. In 2015 and 2018, he co-authored and directed an expedition to the ends of the world, which at the time had never been done before: a docu-reality called “Xtractor Around” that followed four Italian tractors across an adventure in the territories of Australia and South Africa, traveling more than 16,000 km; it has been broadcasted on different Discovery channels and on their social media. In 2020, he directed “Isolated in Stromboli,” a documentary film that shows the island of Stromboli through the surrounding sea, the people and its famous volcano during wintertime; the volcano has been “voiced” by the Sicilian storyteller Salvo Piparo. The film depicts the traditions, sounds, art and customs of the place, connected to the respect, love and people’s deep sense of belonging. The film has been nationally and internationally recognized: Special Mention award Stromboli 2022; 5 nomination from the Oceanside International Film Festival of 2020 (Best Picture, Best Feature Documentary, Best Direction in a Feature, Best Cinematography in a Feature, Best Editing in a Feature); Special Mention Global Shorts Los Angeles 2020; Honorable Mention IFA Istanbul Film Awards 2020; Winner Istanbul Film Award; Honorable Mention Venice Film Awards 2020.
