The Mayor who collected archaeological finds
Second half of the nineteenth century. Near San Lorenzo’s parish church in Pegognaga, a small town in the Mantuan Oltrepò, Roman archaeological finds come to light; some will be destroyed, sometimes sold, somehow missing, until the first Mayor of the town, Alessandro Nizzoli, understands their relevance.
Here, he enthusiastically tells of his recovering work of ancient remains done with his brother Achille and with his friend the director of the Mantua’s Museum and, proudly, recalls having chosen the capital with the inscription to the Padus Father, which was found here, as the town’s emblem.
