Director Biography - Marcus Ako

I started out in 1994 as an Actor with a comedy troupe in Nigeria. After moving to the UK in 1996, I became involved in school plays, the highlight being the role of Sky Masterson in Wimbledon College’s production of Guys and Dolls in 2000. At Royal Holloway University, although I studied Psychology, I was heavily involved with the Drama department and appeared in a number of productions. It was after I graduated from University in 2003 that I began to write stage plays, sketches and scripts for short films, some of which I acted in as well. In 2006, I was selected with 29 other young Actors to appear in The Old Vic New Voices 24-Hour Plays organized by Kevin Spacey. In 2009, I wrote and produced a short film ARI, and in 2012, I wrote, produced and directed two short films – Fractured and The Extraction – both which are currently being distributed by Cupsogue Pictures. Around the same time, I began writing feature film screenplays, and currently have one of my screenplays – Welcome to Purgatory – currently in pre-production.

Director Statement

Being a father of two young children and having a full-time job far removed from the film industry, making films is exceedingly difficult. Out of frustration and anger at an opportunity to work on a larger project due to my current situation, I decided to make a short using nothing but my surroundings.
Cue shooting with my iPhone around the house while my wife watched VAMPIRE DIARIES on her tablet.. Three days later, I had shot and edited everything on my phone.
But it needed music. So I reached out to the uber-talented Joseph Bennie, and a week later, IDLE BABYSITTING was done.
Perseverance...
