Director Statement

"Ice Lolly" is a heartfelt exploration of the human experience, a gentle reminder that life is best savored moment by moment. This film, born from my passion for the human psyche and personal experiences, offers viewers an intimate journey into the world of Hub, a character whose very essence embodies the human heart and its desires.

The story unfolds through the innocent eyes of Hub, a child with boundless dreams, like running on Saturn's rings and soaring to the sun, akin to Hanuman. These unique aspirations, often discouraged by a well-meaning but misguided mother, plant the seed of a relentless pursuit of wealth. Hub's life becomes a relentless quest for money, making life a constant emergency, which eventually leads him to become the wealthiest person on Earth. Yet, it is only then that he realizes the true cost of his choices.

"Ice Lolly" invites the audience to contemplate life's fleeting nature and the consequences of prioritizing material wealth over the simple joys of existence. The film's organic and childlike visual style, reminiscent of crayons and watercolors, mirrors the purity and energy of Hub's dreams. The strategic use of color signifies the emotional journey, with black representing moments of despair.

Drawing inspiration from the works of Adrien Merigeau, Alan Holly and my fascination with human anatomy and psychology, the character of Hub, with his heart-shaped head and empty chest, symbolizes the curiosity and passion within all of us. Hub's second chance at life, represented by a falling domino, serves as a powerful metaphor for embracing the present moment.

Ultimately, "Ice Lolly" aims to leave audiences with a sense of calm, urging them to savor each day and celebrate life's journey without the urgency of a destination. It is a reminder that life is a beautiful voyage meant to be cherished as it unfolds, one day at a time.
