Director Biography - Inbal Klein

My name is Inbal Klein and I have a B.Ed.Fa and MFA in Cinema. I love to write, create and produce films. In addition to my academic studies I engaged in pragmatic workshops such as entrepreneurship and personal development. Beyond the short films I’ve created in my film studies (that included screenplay, directing and producing), I gained experience in producing short films and I produced short films for other students. Recently, I’m working on my own entrepreneurship that is called “You’re (The) Story” that is purposed to help people to tell their own stories through films.

Director Statement

The idea for the movie “I Was Here First” was conceived from a personal relationship that I went through last summer. In the beginning of the relationship I felt that something was not working well but I decided to continue it despite of those feelingw. Only at the end of the relationship that I realized what I really wanted to write about or in other words I could just spell out what I felt during this relationship. By writing the script for thisr film I could express what I felt, when other people that were close to me couldn’t really understand. For the people outside of this relationship it seemed like I’m happy in this relationship and couldn’t get my own perspective to it. All long through this relationship I set and wrote my feelings about it. I felt like I’m screaming inside of myself what I’m feeling about this relationship. It was hard for me to express it out and especially to my boyfriend. I was afraid that when I will speak out my feelings everything will end and that’s the reason I’ve chose to stay in this relationship and to continue it as long as I could. It was important for me that people will hear my voice in this world and that fact I also exist in this relationship. By writing this script I felt that I can show my point of view because I felt that through my relationship my boyfriend didn’t see me at all. It was important for me to create a film that is close to my heart, something I could recognize it myself. A film that I could see myself as the hero and that’s how the idea for this movie was born. It’s important for me to emphasize my hero yearning for love in her life and how much far she would go and, on the way, she loses her own values just for the sake of love. Only at the end of the film my heroine regains her senses and understands to what relationship she got herself to. To clarify, my heroine understands that she is a third wheel in her own relationship. The film itself takes place at the cinema and is shot at the dark because of it but at the same time I want the film to be colorful as it could be even though the film genre supposed to be a comedy-drama. The film itself would be shot in out-breathing shots event though the film is shot mostly when the actors are seating. Through the movie my focus would on Naama, the leading actress. It’s important for me that the viewer would identify with her but at the same time would understand the other characters in this story. I tried to take advantage on the light that comes out from the screen and that it would take a leading part in my movie. I think that most of the shots in this film would be close ups on the leading actress but also shots that show the “romantic triangle” that exists in this film. The fact that this film takes place in the theater lets me play with the idea (especially in the beginning of the film) that the leading actress is “living in her own dream world” , and by that I mean that she thinks that she is in a normal relationship that everything is good and shinning in it but later in the film and especially at the end she regains her senses and understands the meaning of her relationship. She comprehends that the right thing to do is actually to end this relationship as fast as she can, no matter what the consequences will be, as she knows that eventually she will overcome and emerge as a healthier and happier person.
